The Akucal Shoots Par for Orthopedic Templating

The sport of golf is a game of skill, chance, and a little bit of luck. I’m not a professional golfer, nor do I claim to be one, but I’ve been known to hit a nice shot or two in my days at Schenley Park Golf Course. And I always find it interesting if not comical to see PGA Tour superstar players like Tiger Woods or Phil Mickelson hit errant tee shots into the water hazards or hit a chip shot that only goes two feet and think to myself, “I do the same thing and they are supposed to be professionals (Although I do it more often)”! But within the golf industry, companies are always coming up with innovative equipment to improve the way people, both pros and average Joes, play the game.

This innovative equipment comes in the form of bigger drivers, contraptions to correct swing motions, tee variations, gloves to correct a bad hand grip, and even golf balls with “irregular dimple patterns” that claims the ball will fly straight regardless of a person’s swing type. These innovations were all designed with the golfer’s needs in mind. Let’s face it, if you have ever golfed in your life nothing is more frustrating or creates thoughts of quitting the game than bad shot after bad shot. If one or more of these devices will improve your game regardless of skill level, than it would  be worth a purchase (I know I am going to get the “fly straight” balls).

Like golf, the “sport” of orthopedic templating can be a “game” of skill, chance, and a little bit of luck if one is NOT utilizing a device that offers the accuracy, durability, and functionality that the Akucal scaling device designed by J2 Medical can provide.  While it wasn’t designed with the golfer in mind, it WAS designed with the orthopedic surgeon in mind.  And like good golfers, the Akucal only utilizes one ball, or radiographic marker, and is extremely accurate when placed in the plane of the bone or joint being examined.   There is a plethora of situations for which the Akucal can be employed including: Read More »

MLB Pitchers Carry Heavy Burden on Their Shoulders

Posted: 04/11/11 | 286 views

Major League Baseball (MLB) just finished the first full week of the 2011 season and already there are 92 players listed on the disabled list (DL) covering all 30 teams.  The majority of the injuries are minor; mostly illness, soreness, cramps, or pulled muscles.  But as the 162 game season progresses throughout the next six months, the number of injuries will increase, become more severe, or could potentially even end a players’ season or career.

According to the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), over 23,000 shoulder replacement surgeries are performed each year in the United States.  Although Osteoarthritis is the most common reason for this orthopedic procedure, rotator cuff injuries from repetitive stress (often occurring in professional athletes such as baseball players), is also a common cause of shoulder replacement surgery.  So what could be considered “repetitive stress” for a professional athlete?  Just to put into perspective Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan, who pitched in the Major Leagues from 1966-1993, accounted for 5,714 strikeouts and 2,795 walks, which AT MINIMUM means he threw 28,322 pitches during his career.  Talk about repetitive stress?!?  And that number does NOT include off-season practice, spring training practice and games, regular season game-day warm-ups, post-season appearances, foul balls, full counts, or even pitching in a wiffle ball game in the backyard!  Factoring in all those tosses and Ryan could easily have thrown more than 50,000+ pitches in his major league career.  How such repetitive stress on a pitchers arm can cause the need for shoulder replacement surgery is explained in a report by Dr. Champ Baker Jr. and Dr. Andrew Ayers of the Hughston ClinicRead More »

“Step Right Up”for Orthopedic Templating

Posted: 02/16/11 | 359 views

“Step right up ladies and gentlemen boys and girls, step right up!!”  Now I remember going to the local fair as a kid and there was always the “game” where an individual would ask to guess my height and weight.  Guessing of height seems to be the easier of the two because the game attendant knows his own height and can make an educated guess as to mine.  Weight, on the other hand, seems somewhat more difficult.  Again the attendant knows his own weight but looks can be deceiving and making an educated guess can be more challenging.  Of course he would allow for a margin of error because guessing someone’s height and weight down to the inch and pound respectively would be almost impossible on a regular basis to make a profit.  Joint replacement surgery used to be somewhat of a guessing game. But for joint replacement surgery, allowance for margin of error is not an option orthopedic surgeons are afforded.  Read More »

Does the Scaling Device Akucal Help with Better WiFi?

Posted: 02/02/11 | 267 views

Sorry, the answer is no.There used to be a show called, “Kids say the Darndest Things” most recently hosted by Bill Cosby.  It was an entertaining show asking young children questions about life, love, work etc. and listening to their thoughtful, yet hilarious responses.  In one episode Mr. Cosby asked a young boy what year his father was born and the child responded, “About 1000 B.C.”!Recently I had the opportunity to visit a local high school and speak to a group of 11th and 12th grade students in an Entrepreneurship program.  I brought with me an Akucal and before I told them its name or that it was utilized for orthopedic scaling, I asked them what they thought the device was designed to do.  I let them handle the device and they soon figured out the suction-cup base, flexible arm, and noticed the company name J2 Medical on the lever.  While they aren’t kids, they are young adults, some of their responses were comical.  Here are some of their candid responses.

  • “Strength builder for arms and hands”
  • “It indicates room numbers”
  • “It makes your desk look cool”
  • “It’s a weapon”
  • “It helps to get better WiFi”
  • “It takes body temperature”
  • “Some type of ‘heart thing’”
  • “It’s a light”
  • “To hang tools or your coat on”
  • “It helps to calm patients”
  • “It treats cancer by sending ultra-violent lights to your brain”
  • “It’s a paperweight”
  • “It’s nothing, it just does random things”
  • “It tests reflexes”

Never in my wildest dreams did I think a student would actually know that the device was utilized for pre-surgical planning, or that the single-sphere marker was 25MM, that the flexible arms allows for accurate placement at anatomy level, or that it was even called an Akucal!  But it was great to visit with these students to discuss business and entrepreneurship, to witness their enthusiasm for the business world, to listen to their ideas and new product concepts, and hopefully to inspire them to follow their aspirations to succeed not only as an entrepreneur, but as a person as well.

Digital Image Scaling for Radiology… what’s the point?

Posted: 11/11/10 | 264 views

“We never would have imagined that the world would have demanded the Akucal at this level…”  states COO of J2 Medical, Dan Parisi.  ”Digital imaging is the present and future of Radiology and a magnification factor must be determined for every image to ensure accuracy… If the image is not scaled, the accuracy of your post planning could easily be 20% off.”  ”Going digital is a huge investment, an Akucal makes certain that you are getting your moneys worth.  I’m guessing that is the reason Akucals can be found on every continent and trusted by nearly every cutting-edge Healthcare Facility in the world.”  ”Our customer list is very impressive and it grows every day… J2 understands the problem and the Akucal solves it in every situation.”www.j2medical.com
